1) Dzama / Pettibon is a collaborative zine between Marcel Dzama and Raymond Pettibon. The zine was originally for the MoMa PS1 NYABF but sold out in one day. Published on the occasion of Forgetting the Hand at David Zwirner Gallery, New York, 2016. Numbered on the interior last page from an edition of 500.
2) Let Us Compare Mythologies is from the ongoing collaborations between artists Raymond Pettibon and his friend Marcel Dzama, and was published on the occasion of the artists’ exhibition at David Zwirner, London, in October 2016. Includes a fold-out poster of ‘It is big big business’. Featuring Pettibon’s depictions of surfers immersed in gigantic waves intertwined with Dzama’s illustrations of outlandish characters. Published by Zwirner Books, 2016.

About Raymond Pettibon (American b. 1957)
Having emerged from the Southern California DIY culture and its punk-rock sensibility, Raymond Pettibon fuses together youthful edginess and political engagement. Drawing from disparate cultural sources—from Marcel Proust to the Bible—the artist’s cartoon-inspired ink drawings on unframed paper recall the look of fanzines and concert flyers, however with an often cryptic semblance of narrative. More recently, Pettibon’s works have been a sustained critique of the Iraq War and American foreign policy, such as No Title ("Why press him?") (2007), which depicts George W. Bush with bloodied hands and surrounded by pointed, ironic commentary. Pettibon was a recipient of the Whitney's Bucksbaum award in 2004.
Marcel Dzama:
Often compared to outsider artist Henry Darger, Marcel Dzama’s small ink and watercolor drawings of hybrid characters, resemble story illustrations. Interspersed with a range of references including Surrealist film, Dadaism and Soviet-era prop art, his work more often recalls folk and craft storytelling traditions. Dzama also works in sculpture and video and has experimented with puppetry and costumes. His work has been used as cover art for bands such as They Might Be Giants, Beck, and The Weakerthans; and his costume designs have been seen in music videos, including the video for the Bob Dylan’s When the Deal Goes Down.

Raymond Pettibon
Raymond Pettibon was born in Tucson, Arizona in 1957, but spent his childhood in Hermosa Beach, California. After graduating from the University of California at Los Angeles with a degree in economics, Pettibon received his BFA in 1977. His artistic career began to take off in the early 1980s. During this time, he produced album artwork and posters for many punk rock bands such as Black Flag and Sonic Youth.
Many of Pettibon’s prints, paintings and mixed media works incorporate harsh and equivocal text and imagery. While some of the text is borrowed, others are Pettibon’s original words. His style echoes that of comics and includes motifs from youth culture, politics, sports, and celebrity. While his early works were completed in black and white, often with the use of India ink, later in his career Pettibon began incorporating color in his use of paint, collage, watercolor, gouache, and pencil. He is known for his edgy one-liners and raw depiction of youth culture and the punk scene.
Pettibon’s most recent works critique contemporary controversies such as the Iraq War and American politics. Pettibon is currently living and working in New York City.
